Umar Patek and Wife Arrested

Umar Patek and Wife Arrested

The National Intelligence Agency (BIN) has confirmed that Umar Patek, the fugitive in the Bali bombing, has been arrested by the Pakistani Police. He was arrested together with his wife, also an Indonesian national.
“He was wounded,” said BIN head Gen. Ret. Sutanto yesterday at the State Palace. According to Sutanto, there was a gunfight before Patek was finally immobilized. “There were casualties from the Pakistani Police,” said Sutanto without mentioning when and where the arrest took place. Sutanto said that he had received information from Pakistan a few days ago. Therefore, the police and BIN were sent to identify the arrested man. “The man in the photo was identical with Patek, but we had to make sure,” he said. Indonesian Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo, said the investigating team already had access to meet with the man, born in 1970, from Pemalang, Central Java. “The team brought along documents, photos, and DNA tests,” said Timur. Sutanto said he did not rememberthe name of Patek’s wife, but he said they had traveled to Pakistan together. Patek was a fugitive and there was a $US1 million reward for his capture. He ran away to south of Philippines following the Bali bombing which killed 202 people, 88 people of whom were Australian. A Pakistani Intelligence Agency officer said Umar Patek’s arrest was also cooperation with the US intelligence. “CIA gave information that Patek went to Pakistan,” the officer told Thenews. However, the officer, who refusedto reveal his name, denied that the arrest was carried out together with the CIA. “We did the operation alone,” he said.
